Based on our survey responses, females drink more caffeinated beverages than males. 49% of the respondents said that their caffeine consumption increased significantly when they entered high school. According to respondents, this was due to the amount of homework given, to stay awake at night, to get energy, to function better, and to relieve stress. High school work is a major factor. Coffee is needed when sleep can not be given. Our respondents drink mostly coffee and soda rather than tea or energy drinks. They find themselves drinking more caffeine as the high school years go by and the work load and stress increases. Students whose parents drink caffeine regularly are more prone to becoming dependent on caffeine as they are exposed to it at home.
On average, our respondents showed to drink around 2 cups of caffeinated beverages a day. If given the opportunity to stop consuming caffeine, 60% would not do so. 90% said that they did not consider themselves addicted, but when individual responses were analyzed they drank at least one cup a day to feel like they were functioning properly. Our data collection supported our question. The data shows that high school students are relying on caffeine for many reasons. The most common reason is all the stress put on students in school. Further study is not needed for our particular research.
